Two Nice Eight Points and An Unusual Doe!
Bow hunting a bust!
This year has been a year of ups and downs for my wife and I. We hunted Indiana in bow season and had one bad break after another. First I shot over a beautiful six-point basket rack buck. I judged it for forty-plus yards and it was at about thirty. Then Jodi saw buck after buck and couldn't get a decent shot on one. Then I missed my second buck. This one was an eight-point I shot over also. No, my bow is not out of tune, I misjudged this one for forty-five yards and it was at thirty-three. I realized after that week that my problem was my glasses. I have never worn them into the field for fear of being spotted. I now realize that I have to wear them if I am going to continue to kill deer with my bow. Yes, I will be forty years old in 2009!
Gun hunting in North Carolina a big success!
I traveled to Bladen County, NC. to preach a revival in mid-November. I have hunted in North Carolina every other year for about ten years. This year was a tremendous success. You are allowed to kill six deer on one $120.00 tag. I took my 7MM Rem. Mag and it did the trick. I harvested a total of four deer. I shot two eight-pointers and two does. One eight-point had been in a fight and was missing his entire antler on one side, but had a nice big body. The other eight-point had a slightly smaller body, but a nice symmetrical rack that should make a nice little mount. The second doe I killed was a big bodied deer. I had a great time harvesting these deer. Next year I will be back in N.C. but will use a Savage (Stevens) 308. The 7MM was a bit too much.
The first doe I killed was truly an unusual deer. I was sitting over a large open area. I was on the edge of a timber with a beaver pond out in front of me. From the other side of the swamp emerged a few deer. I needed to fill both buck and doe tags and so I decided to take a shot. The deer were about a hundred yards out when I lifted my gun and found the deer in my scope. At first it appeared to be a spotted fawn in my scope. Then I realized that it was a large deer with pigmentation problems. They call it calico in N.C., but I think the proper name is piebald. Whatever you call it, it is part albino and makes for an interesting hunt, as well as some sweet vittles. I have some pics. of it below. The pics. of one of my eight points are also below. I still have some room on my roll of film, and have one more chance to fill my bow tag in Indiana on the return trip out to the Midwest. I hope when I get it developed it will not only have my other gun kill buck on it, but also another nice bow kill buck. Pray for me and check back in a few weeks. Happy hunting! Bro. Ted
